Red Carpet Recap: Grammys

Last night was the 54th Grammy awards, and with the news of Whitney Houston's sudden passing, this years awards took on a more in memoriam feel. There were some great performances throughout the night, the ones that stood out were Bruno Mars, Adele's amazing return, the Beach Boys with Foster the people, and of course, Jennifer Hudson's tribute to Whitney. I had joked about how the Grammy's could have a Whitney Houston drinking game (drink at every mention), but I would like to add that despite the appearance of some of my tweets, I was not participating. (On that note, does anyone else have an incredible that changes words to the plural or select a word that you in fact, did not select? It is so annoying!) It was touching to see how the artists influenced by Whitney's talent paid tribute to her.

Anyway, on to the Red Carpet. A lot of my hits and misses are people who I had no idea who they were.

Hits:

Sera, Tamara Braun, Jessie J

I have no idea who this Sera is, but her top knot bun, gorgeous soft blue pleated dress and punch of color belt, had me loving whoever it is she may be. Next, Tamara Braun, I hadn't heard of her either, but I guess she's a Soap Opera actress, I loved her dress, too. The color was fantastic. And Jessie J, I loved J.Lo last year in her Pucci disco ball mini, and this Julien MacDonald is just as gorgeous.

Kate Beckinsale, Kelly Rowland

Kate Beckinsale's Zuhair Murad dress was so flattering on her, I love beige-y nudes and black together, and this was just such a great pick for her. Similarly, Kelly Rowland's Alberta Ferretti was stunning, but I also loved how her hair, makeup, and accessories complimented everything so well. And lets talk about those arms, with arms like that, you need to be wearing a dress that shows them off!

And my pick for best dressed:

Adele

Let's face it, this was Adele's year.This sparkling dress is perfect for her, and I loved the red lip. I didn't care much for the dress she sang in, but the nude lip there was to die for. And really, suck it, Lagerfeld for your comments. I love me some Chanel, but you went too far.

Misses:

Bonnie McKee, Fergie, Rhianna

Okay, for starters, I had never heard of Bonnie McKee. No clue who she was, whatsoever. Apparently, she sings. And from my Google search, she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel back in like 2009. A lot of help that gave her. Next, we have Fergie, in her Jean Paul Gaultier Couture. I believe I tweeted "Oh Fergie...no..." and that's still what I think. Sure Tangerine Tango is Pantone's color of the year, but no. And Rhianna. I have to admit, the dress, and the shoes and clutch I love. It's the hair that absolutely kills it.

All I have to say is that this whole "flatform" trend needs to go. Frankenstein-esque feet do nothing for the figure. Not to mention the FUPA of that high waisted mini-mullet-like-skirt.

Lastly, remember back when Gaga tweeted a tease about her modeling in Thierry Mugler's fashion show last Spring? She was unveiling one of her new songs while she walked the catwalk? No? Well she said this (again, Google saves, you can find anything. I'd like to thank whoever it was that took this screenshot).

I'd like to think that maybe it wasn't the Mugler show she was teasing. It was this.

Sasha Grandiva

Because I'm pretty sure that's what Gaga gave birth to. Congrats, Gaga, it's a girl! I will give both Bonnie and Sasha credit, we may not have known who they were before last night, but we all do now!

DIY: Ribbon and Pearl Necklace

I love that on Pinterest you can get all sorts of DIY inspiration. On a whim last week, I suddenly had the DIY urge and I decided that I'd rope my friend Diana in on it. She and I already had plans for the weekend and if getting crafty is awesome alone, then it is way more awesome with a friend.

Thing is, Di isn't much of a DIY'er. She's a smarty-pants...but not the type to get her craft on. I may have scared her when I told her I was roping her in on my weekend plan. (I received an email saying "What craft?") I scanned Pinterest and found one that I had marked that didn't require too much time or for supplies and decided this would be the one. It was perfect for a lazy Sunday.

Here's how I made my own ribbon and pearl cluster necklace


Supplies: Ribbon, Cheapy necklace(s), Scissors, Lighter, Ruler

I bought 2 Opera length faux-pearl necklaces from Forever 21 ($6.80 each). I tried other discount-style stores (Five Below, Claire's, Temptations) but F21 was the cheapest. You could also buy regular 16-18inch necklaces like the Mardi Gras style beads for this too, just use more. (You could even use a spray paint and turn the cheap Mardi Gras ones into any color!)

Fold long necklaces, get length

Once you figure out how long your necklaces are, figure out how long you want your necklace. I cut 15 inches of ribbon, I wanted to tie a bow in the back, this will make my necklace shorter from the bow...plan accordingly.

Tie ribbon to necklace. Knot tightly. Burn edges of ribbon

Gather your necklaces and knot one side of the ribbon. Be sure to squish (why yes, that is a technical term) the ribbon in between the beads so they don't shift. Repeat on other side. (Tip: I gently brush the ribbon along a flame to melt the ends and prevent fraying. Di on the other hand, lit hers on fire by sticking her ribbon directly into the flame. Luckily, my apartment is still standing.)

Find mid point of ribbon, cut, burn edges again (thanks Di for holding the ribbon so I could get the picture!)

Find the middle where you'll be cutting your ribbon, cut and again burn the edges to prevent fraying. You can skip this step for a long style, or you can cut closer to one of the sides and tie the bow there so you have that showing--just keep in mind, if that's what you do, it will be your only option for tying. Your necklace is now ready to wear!

So I browsed the Internet to see if I could find some currently for sale necklaces similar to this, you know...for comparison. Here's what I found:

The Limited one is the least expensive, and has not only pearl, but chain...but still costs more than mine. My version got a ton of compliments at work, and really added a lot to my rather boring, uninspired outfit.

Red Carpet Recap: Golden Globes

Last night was the 69th annual Golden Globe awards, and once again I was barely aware of the shows/movies nominated, but highly aware of the fashions. So lets just jump right in to the hits, misses and trends.

Hits:

Berenice Bejo, Clare Danes, Salma Hayek

Berenice Bejo? Who? That's exactly what I said when I saw her name pop up. She's in "The Artist", and this blue dress is gorgeous. There's really gorgeous knife pleating on this dress, that you cannot really grasp in the picture. The way the dress moved, perfection. Clare Danes, the dress flattered, but the detailing on the back was the real stunner. Salma Hayek's Gucci number was beautiful, and lets admit it, I'm a sucker for sparkle.

Honorable Mentions:

Emma Stone, Diana Aragon

Emma Stone's burgundy and fuchsia panel dress was unique and certainly flattering for her figure. She seemed most excited for the eagle on the belt...a great standout piece. Diana Aragon's dress was falling flat from the looks of the twitter-verse last night, but I loved the laser cut details, and again this was a dress that moved gorgeously. I think this red number is just like that hot red number January Jones wore last year. You either hated it, or loved it. There was no in between.

Misses:

Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Mila Kunis

Angelina Jolie's attempt at punching up a washed out color was reminiscent of last year's pregnant Natalie Portman dress with the red floral detail. Meryl Streep looks like she forgot that she was not only attending the awards show, but also nominated and cut her trip to the Grand Ole Opry short. Mila Kunis...well she wasn't going to top last year so she set the bar low. I expect a comeback.

Juliane Moore, Sarah Michelle Gellar

Julianne Moore looked like she took an 80's prom dress and threw it over a gown. Peplum and Mermaid tail styles should never go together. SMG's look from head to toe was a disaster. Well, maybe not all the way to toe, but even the most rockin' shoes couldn't save this dress. I thought it was tie-dyed. It's worse. It's what happens when you drip dye into water and swirl it around.

Trending:

Nude, Nude, Nude

Julie Bowen, Amy Poehler, Heidi Klum

Sarah Hyland, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel

There was a whole lot of nude dresses going on. If it wasn't a nude dress, it was a nude face/hair look (Reese Witherspoon let her natural beauty show, it made up for her less than flattering red dress).

Even though there was a sea of nudes, and black and grey, if people were going for a color, they went big.

Missi Pyle, Maria Menunos, Paula Patton, Mireille Enos

Also not pictured was Emily Blunts gorgeous yellow gown. Not only were these ladies bold in the yellow, they happened to perfectly match the floral centerpieces at the tables. I give all of them credit--being photographed in a yellow dress on the red carpet is a bit McDonald-y.

Alright, I'm a Pinterest addict. I'm okay with this. The day I found out there was an app for Droid (finally) was a great day. Now, I can browse while I wait for the train, or any other reason. I pinned this, because Gerard Butler and beading? I'm in heaven. Which lead me to this Tumblr that is filled with awesome AND Ryan Gosling. What?

Check out Handmade Ryan Gosling. Just a little bit more dreamy. Although, there needs to be a Bradley Cooper one...while he's talking in French. *le swoon*

Jason Wu for Target

Another lookbook for a Target collaboration has been released. This upcoming collab is with Jason Wu, and is slated for release on February 5. Wu was sprung into fame when he designed First Lady Michelle Obama's Inaugural gown (remember that gorgeous white, one shoulder number that started many women's arm envy--her arms are hot!).

After the Missoni for Target disaster, I'm apprehensive about this launch. The Versace for H&M was greeted similarly, and I think that this has the same potential outcome. Especially since prices are reasonable, ranging from $19.99-$59.99. I've got my eye on 3 pieces, so I'm hoping it isn't. But hopes aside, lets take a look.

I know I'm a little tardy for the party, but I was having a nice little 2 week break from work, and since I was placed in an Air Cast boot to heal a serious sprain in my ankle, I was forced to take it easy. The horror! I'm back at work now, and it's...chaotic. Nothing like jumping right back into it!

2011 was a good year for me. I made a new friend (and she will totally catch a reference in the above paragraph), worked on growing petal & pink, joined IFB, was smarter with my shopping, ate better, and overall improved just about all aspects of my life. I also turned 30. When I was 25-26, 30 seemed so scary to me, I dare even say I thought it was old. As I turned 29, I had a more "bring it on attitude", and now that it's here, I'm bringing it. I'm excited at all the things I have planned, and hope to grow and take in so much more than that.

I'm not one for resolutions. So, instead of making those, I'm making a list of things I'm looking forward to, and even sharing here on this blog. I'm calling it "12 in 12", because I like to give things corn-ball titles. So here goes:

12. Run an uninjured 5k (see air cast mention above).
11. Take in more outdoor activity. 2011 was marred by a rained out camping trip, too few hikes, and even less bike rides.
10. Expand petal & pink. Big plans you guys, stay tuned!
9. Take a photography class. To be honest, I use my camera so much on jewelry pictures, I haven't even scratched the surface of what it can do. I will learn more!
8. Build quality into my wardrobe. I have a good functioning closet now. It's time to up the ante and start investing! (I'm looking at you, coveted MBMJ bag)
7. Start a garden. Okay, so this will probably be husband's doing, but I will contribute by picking veggies.
6. Get 100 more Etsy sales. I hit 100 sales this holiday season* and now I want to bust my booty to carry on the momentum!
5. Celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary with a grilled dinner at our house.
4. Buy a house. (Which is why a lovely grilled by husband dinner would be amazing. We miss charcoal grilling.)
3. Get a dog!
2. Visit Paris (and London, too).
1. Be more open to where this year will take me! I've got such big plans in 2012, I don't want to over look the smaller things, those can turn into the big memories of life.

I have to say, the Coralie Bickford Smith books are gorgeous and a great gift for anyone who is into books, decor or fashion. They will certainly add punch to any bookcase, or end table. The F.Scott Fitzgerald series just screams Fitzgerald-flapper chic, and anyone who loves The Great Gatsby, could appreciate this collection.

Anthropologie is another great store for unique holiday gifts for the hard-to-shop for. I often buy Yankee Swap (aka White Elephant, depending on where you're from) gifts from Anthro because I know they'll be useful and not a typical run of the mill swap gift. One of those mugs, a box of tea, and you're in under $20!

The Belkin Tune-tie for iPod, would make a great stocking stuffer, $10 for a set of 3, you could easily break it up and distribute as needed. I know I for one am constantly fighting and un-knotting my earbuds.

I've Got the Blues

Sometimes a post title is the hardest part of blogging.

Lately I've been obsessed with deep blue colors. Cobalt blue, Royal blue...love. Next to pink, rich shades of blue are probably my favorite color and it has been popping up everywhere! For starters, my car is bright blue--"Winning Blue" as Mazda puts it. Since my car is slowly dying I could perhaps be displacing some of the loss I'm feeling from replacing him into my current obsession of this color. I've recently made 2 bright blue purchases, and there's so much more I want!

If I'm uncertain about investing in a trend, and lets face it, brightly colored pants will likely not be around next year, I try to find and inexpensive substitute. The Nordstrom Juniors department is usually a good source.These are actually good quality, not low rise, and really flattering.

Peplum and Pussybows

Old classic silhouettes are making a comeback, but when I see things like this...clothing in styles that are modern with the classic silhouette is it really a comeback? Or is it just that a classic has caught the eye of the majority? I'm drawn to bows, and I've got a pussybow top I bought at Old Navy back in 2003, and a peplum jacket that I just donated to a swap that was from 2006, so these styles have always been in. I think Rachel Zoe says it best, they're having a major moment right now.

Designer collaborations are everywhere. It's a great way for designers to introduce themselves to markets that may be unfamiliar to them. After the Missoni for Target debacle, I'm weary. (Although I still managed to land both my flats, and the heels at a later date at my local Target!)

Versace for H&M was much talked about, and well...now that it's available online (way earlier than expected, I should add). I'm not loving it. Donatella is innovative. These pieces just don't call to me. Let's look.

Shoe Imposter: Miu Miu Glitter Bootie

One of the big pairs of shoes making its rounds are the Miu Miu glitter bootie. Lets take a peek.

While these shoes won't work with my wardrobe, I have to say, there's something sexy about the curve of the heel. We also all know how much I love all things sparkle. These shoes are kitschy and scream high fashion and have the price to go with it. If Sex and the City were still on the air, I'd imagine Carrie Bradshaw would rock the hell out of these shoes. And really, if anything, this shoe is awesome shoe porn.

I then came across these on Endless. (Which I then found on sale on the Steve Madden website...ladies let this be a lesson, always shop around on the interwebs!)

These...well, they're still not working in my wardrobe, and scream a bit Gaga meets Elvis meets Go-go dancer, are close to the Miu Miu's. They are T-strap, not cross strap, beige not a pinky coral shade, and have a major platform. Far less sexy, and not at all what I'd consider shoe porn but if you were drooling for the Miu Miu's on a smaller budget, these bad daddies are for you.

DIY: Bow tie necklace

I've been coming across a lot of bow tie style necklaces lately while browsing stores online. I am loving them. Bow ties are huge right now. Headbands are adorned with them, shoes are bedecked with them, and the pussybow blouse is having a moment. It was decided. I, too, would take on the bow.

The inspiration:


1. Asos 2.Max and Chloe 3. Modcloth

What you'll need:

1 Bow (I found this at JoAnne's)

Chain (to the length you want)

Clasp

4 small open jump rings (I used 3.5mm)

2 slightly larger open jump rings (I used 4mm)

1 closed jump ring (I used 5mm)

Pliers

Bead reamer (or pin/needle)
I happen to have jewelry making supplies on hand, but Michael's and other craft stores sell these supplies.
Be aware most craft stores won't have sterling silver, which is my preference. You'll most likely need to go to a beading store for sterling, or order online.

Pierce hole on the side of your bow (for the connections).

Repeat on other side.

Open your larger jump ring.

Using both pairs of pliers, find the seam and push/pull in opposite directions.

Place smaller jump ring on the open one.

Attach through the hole you made, close jump ring.

To close, repeat how you opened it, be sure to make sure there's no gap.

Repeat Step 2 and 3 for other side.

Measure your bow.

Based on the size of your bow, determine the amount of chain needed.

I wanted my necklace to be about 16 inches, so I cut 13 inches of chain.

Be sure to keep in mind the clasp will add some slight length as well.

Cut the chain into 2 equal lengths.

Open smaller jump ring and attach a piece of chain, then close tightly.

Repeat for other side.

On one side, attach another smaller jump ring and your clasp.

Close tightly.

On the other side, attach the smaller jump ring and the closed one.

Close tightly.

Voila!

And on.

I've said it a few times here, I've said it a lot of times on twitter, and so much more to my friends and family.

I love Steven Tyler. Love. Love. Love. Love may even be an understatement. My husband knows and accepts that the other man in our marriage is Steven. He may have nixed naming any future son we have Steven Tyler, but that's about all he can control. He may not understand it, but he accepts it.

You could only imagine my excitement when I heard that Steven Tyler was teaming up with Andrew Hilfiger (Yes, Tommy's brother) to create an Impulse for Macy's clothing line, Andrew Charles. (Just recently Karl Lagerfeld had an Impulse line with them as well.)

This joint venture meant one thing. I could dress like Steven Tyler. Steven Tyler could dress me. This is exciting!

A lot has already sold out online, and I'm praying that my Macy's is one of the 100 stores carrying the line. For those of you in the NYC area, Steven will be posing with his daughters Chelsea and Mia in the window of the Herald Square store so check it out. (I will ask you to take pictures, I won't ask you to lick the glass for me.)

Boston Fashion Week Sip and Swap

Last Thursday, my friend Betsy and I attended Boston Fashion Week Sip and Swap hosted by the Swapaholics. We met before the event to grab a snack at Meadhall before heading over to the Microsoft NERD center for the event. The weather that day was tricky. Much like fall in New England, it was predicted to be warm(ish), rainy during the late afternoon, and then either humid, or cold afterwards. Planning the outfit and where to eat was a task. As I walked to Meadhall, it was bright. When we left, it was raining. Then, it was pouring. We had umbrellas, but thanks to the wind...we were soaked. The NERD center was filling with fashionistas soaked to the bone. You would have thought the drowned rat look was "in". We dropped off our swap items, registered and headed for the bathroom to try to save the hair.

Slight improvement.

Hard Cider Saves. (or causes you to forget the hair woes)

After some chatting, and a few hard ciders, the crowd started to flock towards the clothes. Having previously been to a swap, I knew what to expect, although this crowd was much larger. There was still about 10 minutes until we were let loose, and this is the crowd we were behind.

From previous experience, I knew to avoid shoes, dresses, and jewelry/accessories. Clothes were flying off hangers, and minimal elbows were thrown. In comparison, this is a slightly mild version of the running of the brides. I say slightly, because these ladies probably didn't have a bridezilla factor working with them. As the crowds broke up to check out their stash and start trying to trade, Betsy made a last ditch effort to find an item that's near the top of her Fall shopping wish list.

Any tweets with #bfwswap made it to a board, so cool and techy.

She still had no luck. If you have a blazer you're looking to get rid of for 3 pennies, be sure to hit her up on her blog. She'll appreciate it.

As for the outfits, Betsy and I have very similar items in our closets so we decided we'd share what we were wearing with each other beforehand. They sounded (and looked) very different, but when I share the deets...well...you'll see why we're such good friends.

I managed to get some pretty good items from the swap. I knew that if it looked interesting to just throw it in my bag and worry later about size/condition. I think my best finds were a DVF top and a striped sweater from the now defunct Martin & Osa. I also got a few tops that are brands from Target, but in awesome condition and will be great. I'd share pictures of my loot but to be honest, they're still sitting in the trunk of my car waiting to get done with my laundry.

After my first swap, I'd said I wouldn't do one again, but I'm glad I came to this one. It was much better than the one I went to over the summer, I met some great people and have some new items to add (and most likely keep for a while) to my closet.

50 years ago today, my favorite movie was released.

I remember watching this as a young girl and thinking "wow". As I watched this movie with my grandmother, I was enamoured by Audrey. Her free-spirited character, the style, the lifestyle, everything. It kicked off what would become my obsession with Audrey Hepburn.

If you're interested in Breakfast at Tiffany's I'd certainly recommend Sam Wasson's 5th Avenue, 5am it covers all of Truman Capote (Tiffany's is based on a novella of his), making the movie, Audrey and how she became Holly Golightly (beating out Marilyn Monroe among others), and the set. It's a great, easy read. Although don't blame me when you get Moon River stuck in your head throughout the duration of reading the book. Also, there's also a 50th anniversary DVD release featuring improved video/audio quality and bonus features. (I happen to like my version, where there's a photo gallery of Audrey as a special feature.)

You know what's wrong with you, Miss Whoever-you-are? You're chicken, you've got no guts. Back to the Future and Shoe fiends rejoice!

Nike has announced that they've created the limited edition "2011 Nike Mag" shoe. This shoe, is a replica of the one from the classic movie trilogy "Back to the Future" complete with glowing logo. While maybe in the year 2015 (when the movie takes place) we will have flying cars, and all that other awesome 80's futuristic technology, for now super fans and shoe collectors alike can have the chance to purchase these bad daddies. Let's take a look, shall we?

Mmmhmmm. Not too shabby. The limited release of 1,500 pairs is available for auction on Ebay now. Bidding currently ranges anywhere from $3,000-$9,000. Bidding opened up last night and will continue through the 18th. All proceeds from this auction will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's disease research. Michael J. Fox has not hidden his battle with this debilitating disease, and it's great to see Nike taking a role and helping raise awareness through something that is too retro, nerdy, and awesome all at the same time.

Now...if we could only get someone to work on those hoover boards and flying cars...

60 days (give or take) without shopping.

My husband and I made out like bandits on our annual Freeport/Kittery outlet trip this past Labor Day Weekend. Perhaps too well. That, combined with a spendy August, it's time to pull in the reigns on my shopping.

I am not alone. My friend, Betsy, is also currently in a shopping ban herself. We will get through this together. With the help of online shopping carts that will never be purchased, and emailing back and forth about "How cute is this? By the time we shop again it should be on sale!" we will get by.

It seems a bit pretentious, and maybe a bit shallow, but 60 days of no shopping? I'm talking not even a "Oh that's cute...and in my size..and on sale with and additional 30% off" purchase.

Okay, I'm lying. I have birthday gift cards that I will allow myself to cash in. I found a pair of shoes almost identical to my LAMB plum wedges I was coveting and of course, the Missoni for Target launch next week (also will be using gift cards for that).

60 Days. I can do this. It's not really that long. It's only 2 months, or 9 weeks, or 1,440 hours. I can do this. Right?

I have to say, Target gets some mean designer collaborations. Rodarte, Liberty of London, Tucker, Cynthia Vincent, McQueen...just to name a few of them and they are always well received. The latest collaboration announced was Missoni for Target, scheduled to hit stores September 13th. I'm going to be stalking my local Target (and Target.com) like mad. Here's a preview of what's to come:

Every August, I start to get a little wish listy with things. My online shopping carts fill up with shocking balances expected to be paid, but will never make it further than the cart. I have to contribute this to one thing--my birthday is at the end of the month. While I think I'm the easiest person to shop for, my family tends to disagree. I have to start weighing out my options, and due to a horrible incident where my ipod died* the other day, husband got the easy gift by immediately suggesting that a new one would be his gift to me. I was slightly relieved because the ipod was going to be on the top of the birthday list had he not!

I've recently adopted!

It's a word!

A what? A word?

Yes, a word. I was recently told about Save the Words where you can go and adopt a word in an attempt to keep it from vanishing from our vernacular.

The concept is simple. You adopt a word and try to use it and save it from extinction. In times where "text talk" is more and more common, proper grammar and eloquence is fading fast. Move the little box around on the screen and click "adopt-a-word". You can select at random or search for one. I chose my little word at random.

The result: weequashing.

And then I searched again, because I feel if I'm going to be using this word, it should be one that I can easily use, and frequently. And really, the art of spearing fish or eels from a canoe by torchlight doesn't really come into my conversations...well...ever.

So, my second word (sorry cute little wee-word, you are fun to say!) is "vappous". So there it is. The definition is flat, bland. Kind of like how my little bloggity blog has been lately. Sorry guys. I swear I still have some DIY's up my sleeve, and I will have them soon. They're summer fun ones, so obviously, you'll need them. What fun would they be when it's snowing out? Who wants to think of (spoiler alert!) tank tops when you're freezing?

Okay, so I've already admitted my book nerd-ery to you before, but this is one of those instances where, I don't care if you love books and dream of a library where your books sit on shelves that smell of rich mahogany, (any get that reference? If so, 2 bonus points. For what? I'm not sure.) or if your books sit in a little electronic fake book. (Don't get me started on those e-readers, although I'm sure you can guess my stance.) I have to share this treasure of a book with you. This book was one of those books that just completely pulled me in, and is currently in the running for the best book I've read in all of 2011. It's that good.

Let me introduce you to Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon:

This book is so beautifully written, it made me wish I knew Spanish so I could read it in the original language to fully admire the writing. A bit reminiscent of Fahrenheit 451 without the Sci-Fi, a bit of Moulin Rouge, a little bit of mystery. Nothing I can say about this book can do it justice, so just trust me when I say: READ THIS BOOK! As I was going through the book, it had my mind working and wondering and just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, it didn't happen. I would love to see Baz Luhrmann do this as a movie. I could also see Tim Burton taking on a movie adaptation, but Baz would be my pick. So what are you waiting for? Go read this book!

Expect more book reviews. I've got a lot of time to read now that I'm taking the train to/from work.

I don't know about you, but I'm saying they're the same thing. I loved the fun colors of these, and you've got to love that they're made of recycled flip flop materials (I live in flip flops when the weather warms up). There's a rather big difference in price. Anthropologie's set of 18 retails for $48 and on Paper-Source's site you can get 20 for $19! If you have a store near you, I believe they retail for $1-$2. Definitely check them out. I've got a few for myself and I love them. (Not to mention, if you always wear hair elastics on your wrist, these hide them so well!)

Where has time gone!? All of a sudden I was freezing cold and wearing sweaters, and then the next day I was bringing out the sandals and summer dresses. (Quite literally actually. One day it was 50 here, the next day near 80!)

I've been rather busy with stuff I'm sure would just bore you. But I figured I'd keep you apprised of some things going on.

Recent purchases I've mentioned I've had my thrifty little mind on:

I was searching for a few Spring/Summer specific items, these are my acquisitions from those specific posts. First up, the Seychelles Joan shoe. These were marked down on DSW (no longer though for some reason) to $50. I jumped at the chance, but only if I could find a pair of black shoes for summer. Turns out I didn't have to go much further than the Seychelles page on the DSW site, because I found these. I love them! (If you're looking for a cheaper option, try these ones from Target). So, the reason for buying the two pair from DSW was they were having a buy 2 pairs, get 20% off. Bringing my total from $109.88 (reasonable for 2 pairs of shoes, in my opinion) to $87.90. But then, I also had some rewards coupons to use (to the tune of $25) so my total was then brought down to $62.90. I am a rewards member, so I get free shipping, so I got two pairs for essentially the cost of one pair (the Gypsy Sandals were $59.94). You can't go wrong with that! (I may be a shoe whore, but I'm a smart shopper). I also purchased through ebates while DSW was at 8% cash back, so I've got that coming my way in my next check from them, too.

Lastly, my orange is not the new pink, but I'm loving it anyway purchase. The Boldly Brushed Peasant top from Anthropologie. I waited and waited and waited some more for this to go on sale, and had figured that after all that waiting, by the time a sale hits my size would be sold out. Well, I was wrong. For a change, an Anthropologie item I was coveting went on sale and I was able buy it.

I've been feeling crafty lately. I don't know what it is, but I am feeling nostalgic for the friendship bracelets of my elementary school days. Short of buying the craft store out of every color embroidery floss, I decided there has to be grown up versions out there somewhere.

Here are a few styles that I'm digging. I plan on making a trip to the hardware store this evening for the essentials. (Husband nearly died of shock when I told him I had DIY's that required s-hooks, hex nuts and ropes, but gladly agreed to accompany me.)

Why I shouldn't be left to my own devices

I've been searching for a pink case for my phone for quite some time now. Turns out, a hard case in the right shade of pink is hard to find. The other day I was walking around Michael's, I happened to pass by the acrylic paints and thought "I should just paint my case I have now!" (it was a translucent purple color). So I did. This color (Pink Peony) was named perfectly to my liking, and was the vision of pink I had in my head.

I'm not going to insult your intelligence by doing a step-by-step DIY, but essentially, I scuffed up the plastic with sandpaper, painted many many coats of the pink acrylic paint (letting it dry between each coat) and then covered it with gloss-finish Modge Podge (my crafty lover). Now, since doing this, and perhaps because I busted out the Modge Podge, I was thinking you could always stick a picture/stickers/perhaps even some lace, in between the last paint coat (applying while still tacky) and the Modge Podge. A bit of a decoupage, if you will. (I may have spent an entire summer doing this with magazines and small cardboard pencil boxes from my then employer, gifting them to friends before we all took off to college).

I did this while my husband was out, and when he came home he seemed a bit scared of my doings...however, I have to say, it's been 4 days now, and it hasn't chipped at all. I also haven't dropped it yet, so things may change if when that happens.

I really tried. I really really really tried, not to get sucked into the Royal Wedding hoopla. Honestly! Sure, I've admitted that I'm kindof sortof obsessed with Kate's style, but I was trying to avoid it. But still, despite my best efforts, I found myself disappointed this morning when I woke up and found that I missed the arrival and the vows portion of the wedding. I'm going to have to tell you all that it's not so much that it's a royal wedding that had me...it was the fact that it was a wedding. I'm obsessed with them. I will watch any show about weddings, movies where it's clearly a wedding movie, anything wedding, I'm in. I do a lot of custom jewelry orders, and my favorites are always for brides and their bridesmaids. I like talking wedding. Ever since I was 5 years old flower girl in my aunt's wedding, I was obsessed.

Although, watching the wedding this morning, I couldn't help but wonder what Jerramy Fine had to think of it all. It was pretty much her dream that happened. (The book is worth the read, I don't love chick-lit, but I could relate to some of her adventures and thoughts...maybe I shouldn't admit that, but really I am/have always known I'm a Princess, in the best way possible).

Trend I'm Loving: Color Block style

I am loveloveloving the color block trend. I feel like I've been carrying on a romantic fling with color blocking for a few years now, and I think it's because it's clean lines and classic styling make it less of a trend and more of just a bold statement. I love punches of color, and color blocking just feeds into that.

While swooning over some color blocked clothing I thought "I should really make color block jewelry, it's so me!" Then I realized..."duh, Erin, you already are." These earrings are fun and an easy way to get into the trend. You can wear them subtly with just a white top and jeans (let the earrings make the statement) or go crazy, and add them onto a color blocked outfit (which I fully plan to do!).

Fake it, Make it: Kate Middleton Burberry Trench

On March 8th, the classic little trench became even more of an icon. Prince William and Kate Middleton made a trip to Ireland, and Burberry sold out of it's ruffled trench coat immediately. It goes without saying there's a lot of rubber-necking happening with this royal couple and their engagement, and Kate is becoming an icon for her classic style, I can see why.

I for one, would be hard pressed to find this coat, let alone be able to guiltlessly foot the (approximately) $995 bill for it, but I saw it and fell in love. I was a girl on a mission to find a decent replica. (And, it just so happens, that a trench is on my list of jackets to replace in my closet!)

DIY: Lace trim tee for cheap!

A few weeks ago, I saw this post on one of my favorite blogs, Uber Chic for Cheap. This top on Blake Lively is too cute, and my crafty mind was kicked into full gear.

Cute, no?

This past week, I had my wisdom teeth removed and I was looking for something to do the day before my extraction to keep my mind off everything to come, and this seemed like an easy DIY to do just that. From start to finish, it took me about an hour to do, and the total cost of supplies was $3.49 for a yard of lace. I used a tee I had just hanging out in my dresser, and thread and needle from my sewing kit, which I feel is pretty standard in any household. This would have been so much quicker if I owned a sewing machine. (How I still don't own one is beyond me)

You could fold this over into the inside of the tee, and secure it that way, but my
skin is a little too sensitive for that.

I just today thought that a picture of this on would be helpful to see. But, you get
me in my yoga pants and without my slightly puffy post-extraction face.
You could sew random side pieces down to help the folding away. I may do this.

This tee was in my mind for another DIY involving my dear friend RIT dye, and now I'm wondering what would happen if I just tossed the whole thing into some anyway...but these are good colors for the Spring and Summer, so we may have to wait until the Fall.

DIY: Silver cleaning

I have lots of silver jewelry. It comes with the business, I guess you could say. But, I also have a lot of jewelry that once belonged to my great-grandmother (I call this my "archives"). Unfortunately over time silver blackens, I try to stay on top of cleanings, but I ran out of cleaner, and suddenly cleaning my pieces fell to the wayside. One day I decided enough was enough, I was going to find a cleaner that wasn't full of harsh chemicals (as part of my personal goals from my list) and potentially with something from my cabinets. Immediately, I figured there had to be some sort of baking soda paste I could make. I browsed the interwebs and found many homemade solutions. This was the one I went with, and I have to say, it worked great! I always get nervous with cleaning my vintage jewelry with stones, but having all natural ingredients kind of sets you at ease. Natural elements together can't possibly be bad, right?

So, here's what you'll need:

Boiling water
Glass baking dish (make sure the sides are tall enough to cover your jewelry)
Aluminum foil
Baking soda
Tongs (or something to remove the jewelry)
Dry cloth/Microfiber cleaning cloth
About 20-30 minutes depending on the amount of silver

And there you have it. After I dried my goods, I used a microfiber cloth to clean them more and bring out the shine. If you're extra adventurous, you can even use a polishing adapter on the Dremmel and really pump up the shine. I did that on the cuff with the pinkish stone on it.

It's March 10th. Today is National Women and Girl's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

As I mentioned before, I signed up to "Rock the red pump" in order to spread awareness.

Every 35 minutes, a woman tests positive for HIV in the United States. Though much progress has been made in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, women still represent 27 percent of all new AIDS diagnoses, with African-American women making up an overwhelming 66 percent of that number. In 2006, teen girls represented 39% of AIDS cases reported among 13–19 year-olds. Black teens represented 69% of cases reported among 13–19 year-olds; Latino teens represented 19%. These startling statistics are the driving force behind Red Pump's message.

The stats are scary, but they can change. Know your health and get tested. Be in charge of your health and be informed. With a little knowledge HIV/AIDS is preventable. Take charge of your health, take charge of your future. In my previous post, I had mentioned how I'd spread the word to my peers when they commented on my shoes, and I did just that. I had several people I work with and the barista at Starbucks mention them. I told them about the Red Pump Project and the startling stats. That's just a few people, but chances are those people, especially the 7 women I spoke with are likely to share this information and the word slowly gets out. You can do your part, too.

So apparently March is National Craft month. National Craft Month! Clearly I cannot look past this and just sit and observe. Craft is my thing. I want to actively participate!

So I don't have anything planned crafty for today since I'm just learning of this, but don't run away! I figure my first thing would share some of my favorite blogs/websites for handmade, lovely, design, DIY...well...lovelies.

Design Sponge This is a lovely collection for design, be it interiors (I love the Before/After features) or refurbished items, DIY, you name it. Sometimes it gets backed up in my reader but even just flipping through and looking at the pictures is inspiring enough.
Poppytalk Similar to Design Sponge, Poppytalk covers all areas. I love the photography, the Indie Shop of the day feature (on the sidebar) and just so much about this site. Another one where even the pictures get your gears grinding.
Oh, hello friend I strive to have the cohesion she has on her blog. Photography, products, a monthly desktop calendar wallpaper, and she just had the most whimsical handmade/vintage wedding. Also, a fellow Etsian with a lovely shop to boot!
Lillyella Another Etsian with an amazing blog. Fashion, DIY, interviews with other artists, and recipes! Another website that also had a gorgeous DIY wedding. I wish these blogs were around when I was planning!
Amber's Notebook Fashion, DIY and other lovely finds. Amber's DIY's from earrings, to themed parties, to even Lady Gaga costumes she's so creative! (Not to mention that I wouldn't mind having her closet to go through!)
Prim and Propah a new little blog that will certainly be going places. Amanda just embarked on Pattern Project 2011 and I can't wait to see the outcome. AND she has a love for all things BravoTV and lets me tweet up a storm to her, which shows she's a kind and patient person who's not afraid to call me out for my flare for the dramatic.

There's so many other blogs out there that I stop by, but these are the ones I have in my reader and look forward to reading. I'm hoping to soon have some crafty goodness for you, my DIY list is plenty long and my head is swimming with ideas. Craft month is going to be awesome.

Fake it 'till you make it: Seychelles shoes

I've said it a thousand times over. Me? I'm a shoe whore. LOVE shoes. Can't get enough shoes. If I had my way, I'd have a weekly shoe allowance and blow it and then some on shoes. They're my drug of choice. Some of you may prefer the Charlie Sheen drug, which makes your face melt off, but for me, it's shoes.

If I know anything about shoes, it's that designers love knocking off other shoes. You know that scene in Devil Wears Prada about Cerulean? It's kind of like that in the shoe world (or so it seems). Some shoes, I'm okay with buying their lesser counter part. Other times, I want, nay, NEED to buy the original.

I'm thinking that since shoes are one area I excel at (No lie, friends email me asking where they can find a certain shoe, and I probably can find it within 15 minutes, I browse that much!) I would share my shoe finds and their impostors.

I'm starting off with Seychelles, which seem to be right on trend as many people are copying them left and right. In general, Seychelles are affordable coming in at roughly $100 (give or take a little) and in my shoe-world, that's not a bad deal.

Fake it:

These are lovely golden flats, and are also available in a black, pewter and kind of off-white-beige color. Now, if you remember my Spring/Summer shopping list, I am searching for new metallic sandals. This would kind of fit the bill, but not quite what I had in mind. But, they're too cute!

Enter Target.

Mossimo Othelia ($17.99)

Cute. REALLY close in style. But, only available in this nude color and black. So, if you wanted the Seychelles in either of those colors...here you go. However. I am looking for metallic. Gold, specifically.

So I went to Kohls.

So Cristal ($21.99)

These, are actually what I ended up with. I bought them in gold, which appears to be off their website, and back on sale for $16.99, which I then got an extra 15% off of, and I had $20 in Kohls cash that my mom gave me, which means, really these shoes were negative money for me. (I didn't earn the Kohls cash, so again, no money spent there). As you can see, they're similar, not a direct copy, rather a copy of a copy (which we all know ends up not as pretty, but still serves well).

Make it:
Sometimes though it's worth waiting, holding out and buying the real deal. The make it Seychelles here is:

These wedges I saw last year on Nordstrom's website and it was love at first sight. I could not for the life of me find anything that closely resembled them, but I couldn't justify the price when I had other shoes I needed to buy for the summer. This summer, I want a colorful wedge. I'm a sucker for a wedge, and seeing as these are still floating around, the time has come for me to purchase them.

The faker I found for these if you're interested are also by So and from Kohls:

So Serina Wedge ($33.99)

These are really similar, but the fakers are from the juniors shoe section which means the wedge is a bit clunkier. I also prefer the chartreuse colors in the Seychelles versions fabric over the reds of the Kohls pair.

Some shoes are easier to find lower priced counterparts, just about anywhere will have black peep toe heels, or brown boots, but detailed shoes like these can be trickier to find. I just call it a challenge!

Oscars Red Carpet Recap

And so, as of last night, Awards season has come to a close. Oscar night is my Superbowl. I have my "teams" that I cheer for, and sometimes still make my picks based on what they're wearing, much like when I make picks for football teams. (Which, honestly I don't do often at all, only when I'm helping someone else make their decision). I have to say there was a lot of glamour on the red (did it look faded to anyone else?) carpet. And there was also a lot of misses. I was expecting to see a lot more Sapphire jewelery thanks to all the Royal Wedding hoopla, but it seems that bright emerald greens have continued through all of the ceremonies this year.

So lets discuss!

The Good:

Mila Kunis in Elie Saab. Lovely color and I wish I had a picture from the front because over her girls were pale lavender lace insets. She just wouldn't quit. Sexy and elegant, people should learn from this. Lace and chiffon are eternally ladylike. Great color for spring too.

Hailee Steinfeld in Marchesa. This little fashionista is always age appropriate from the hair to the shoes, Hailee is always spot on. She also mentioned this is a OOAK dress that she helped design. Shouldn't come as a surprise, her generation did grow up with the Olson twins!

Sandra Bullock in Vera Wang. This is Sandra's color, and I'm so glad to see her bangs are gone. Those were bad! Her dress really stood out in a sea of muted tones, and I think she did a fantastic job!

The Bad:

Amy Adams in L'Wren Scott. This aged her big time. I don't know if it was the dress alone though that sells her for worst dressed for me...her necklace also does nothing for this look. Which is a shame, she's wearing over a million dollars worth of Cartier. What a waste...

Melissa Leo in Marc Bouwer. Mirrored gold and lace and popped collar. No thanks. The dress was just too much and not flattering. And honestly looked like a grandma's table covering if grandma also had a closeted obsession with gold foiled fabrics.

Cate Blanchette in Givenchy Haute Couture. When I first saw this, I wasn't sold on the "sleeves" but then I saw it all, and it just got worse. It looks like an old Victorian frame. It also appeared that it was two pieces layered together, and I feel without all the framing/armor it could have been a lovely gown.

The Trends:

I noticed, as I'm sure you all did, a lot of recurring themes on the Oscar red carpet...

Blush-y nudes

Hale Berry in Marchesa, Michelle Williams in Chanel Haute Couture, Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier, and Florence Welch in Valentino.

While we're here, holy cats did Mandy Moore grow up! I didn't recognize her at first! She's come a long way from her Walk to Remember days. I think she looked gorgeous in that dress, and the bright red lip is perfect.

Next up, bed head.

Florence Welch again, and Scarlett Johansson in Dolce and Gabbana. It's the "I just rolled out of bed" look. There's nothing about ScarJo's look that I liked, and the hair only helped bring everything down, instead of trying to recover for anything. Florence looks great though.

Last trend worthy of discussion-What the? bottoms.

Nicole Kidman in Dior Haute Couture, Hilary Swank in Gucci Premiere and Marisa Tomei in vintage Charles James Couture. All 3 of these dresses I loved the top half and then when they showed the entire gown I was left disappointed. Nicole Kidman has a pop of color with those shoes, but as much as I love a bright pop of color, this was not happening.

Best Recovery:

Helena Bonham Carter in Colleen Atwood. Her hair and matching shoes are an instant redemption from the Golden Globes catastrophe. While she is always true to herself, and I love her for that, the GG's were not her strongest moment, but she had fun with it. Then, Colleen Atwood won the Oscar for costume, so it was a good night for the both of them. I also die for her fan clutch she was carrying. That was perfect.

And finally, some eye candy. The one true Mr. Darcy. Even more dreamy in a tux.

Orange you glad?

So apparently there's something about this time of year. I did a similar post last year to what you're about to see. (Just without the Polyvore, as it seems to be in a fight with my computer today).

As a refresher, this time of year leaves me utterly bored with my winter clothes, and I start longing for my Spring and Summer wardrobe. I've been working hard over the past few years to have a real working closet that doesn't require total revamping every time I hit a new year/season. It's been a lot of investing but it's hitting the point where I feel uniform and I've gotten rid of a lot of cheap quality items. I have seen the ways in the quality vs. quantity debate. Sure, I'll still buy things at Target, Forever 21 and similar stores, however, they're either trends that aren't sticking around, or items that I go through so quickly (white tanks, for example) that paying a lot doesn't make sense.

Last years colors I was craving were yellow and purple with a spattering of greys. This year, I'm feeling orange. I will still fight anyone who says orange is the new pink. Because pink is always the new pink. Specifically, oranges with turquoise and pink accents and paired with crisp bright whites. Doesn't it sound so tropical and sunny? I agree.

Grammys Red Carpet Recap

So, lets talk Grammy's.

Typically, the Grammy awards are when people get to be a little more artistic and daring in their choice of gown. They can make big statements, have drama and have fun with it.

Last night's awards show had the fashion but it was mild and left me expecting (wanting) more. There were a few looks that I really did enjoy, so lets take a look, shall we?

Hands down the best dressed goes to:

Cee Lo. Flamboyant feathers, chest plate, and chain maille head piece FTW!

Just kidding. He looked like what would happen if Elton John and Big Bird produced La Cage. (For the record, I'm a big fan of all three, just not really this look). Also, I didn't get the muppets...or Gwenyth.

Lea Michelle is actually my best dressed pick. Her Emilio Pucci gown is gorgeous. Of course, as of late, I'm a big fan of anything lace and ruffled.

Next is J.Lo. I may be one of the few but her head-to-toe Pucci look was perfect for her. I liked the Chevron detailing in the metallic, and the shoes...love love love.

Diana Aragon in Vivienne Westwood. Another big hit in my book. These Glee girls are bringin' it. You can't quite see it, but her earrings were really structural looking, and kind of pointed dagger looking. Loved.

The not so pretty?
Miley Cyrus. Her Roberto Cavali was just too...something. People keep talking about how she's gained weight, but whatever, she's still such a cutie in my book. My issues, dress aside, is the accessories. Coco Chanel once said "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory." Take note, Miley. Take note. Still love you. Just take note.

And this. My friends know I have the trifecta of John's on my "list" (you know the kind of list I'm talking about). It has John Cusack, Johnny Depp and John Mayer. I was so confused when I saw this at the Grammys.

Meet Johnny Mayer. Holy confusion. I did a double and triple take before I fully registered him as John Mayer. Wowzah, be still my heart. John Cusack, you're next. Then you'll form one "super John" and I'll have a few new openings on that list.

The performances were decent, although I felt Lady Gaga's performance last year was better (mostly in part for the Elton John bit). And if you follow me on twitter, you'll have seen this already, but it's great that my smaller bands that I enjoy are going to become household names overnight (Muse, Mumford & Sons, Arcade Fire) and while that's exciting and they rocked it (Even if Arcade Fire was trying to bring out seizures from everyone) and I'm glad their getting their kudos.

Rock the red pump

(it took me far too many tries to type "pump" not "pimp" for the record)

I recently came across something called "The Red Pump Project", and was really impressed with what I found out about them.

They're an organization (along with the Red Tie Project, and The Red Project Collective) to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS to minority groups through education and open dialogue about sexual health.

March 10th happens to be National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and what they've done is put a call out, asking bloggers to simply, "Rock the Red Pump" along with a little blurb about the significance.

Since I own a pair of (mostly) red pumps that aren't worn that often, I took this as the perfect opportunity to help raise awareness and at the same time wear my rockin' red pumps. I often get compliments from them while at work, at Starbucks, etc when I do wear them and I'm promising to make sure people are aware of the reason behind my wearing them that day.

So, if you're interested in supporting them, I urge you go sign up yourself. And I'll be sure to show you how I rocked my red pumps on March 10th!

Book Nerd Alert.

It may come as no surprise, but I love books. I'm a major book nerd. I love just wandering book stores, looking at the books. The way the covers feel in my hand, the way the pages fan as I flip through it. It's the one kind of store where I can leave empty handed and still feel fulfilled.

My books take on personalities, they change from inanimate to animate objects in my world. I treat them with care and caution as I read each, and if I lend out a book, the borrower will get a speech about how it needs to come back in the same condition. No dogeared pages, pristine cover, and for the love of all things good, DO NOT BREAK THE SPINE! I was married for almost two and a half years before husband and I integrated our bookcases, and even then, it was nerve wracking. Sure I guess it's a sign we've "made it" if I'm willing to let my books hang out with his. He is a little bit more tough on books...he'll remove a dustcover and leave it somewhere (typically the desk) and let things accumulate on top of them. Not this girl.

One genre I do particularly enjoy is Fashion non-fiction. None of that Shopaholic for me. I've enjoyed books from Simon Doonan, Biographies on Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Evelyn Nesbet, etc. I have two books on Isabella Blow on my list to buy next, I love her. So, while I was reading my past issue of Vogue, I was beyond geeked out when I found out that Camilla Morton (of "How to Walk in High Heels" fame) was coming out with a "Fashion Fairy Tale Memoir" series, blending a classic fairy tale with a fashion icons story. Starting with "Sleeping Beauty" as illustrated by none other than Christian Lacroix.

I found this book at a recent trip to my local bookstore, and I got the chance to flip through the book. The illustrations are breathtaking, whimsy and fierce. (That's a Christian Siriano fierce for the record. Not a fire breathing dragon fierce.). The cover, has a sheer dustcover over the book that gives the cover a three dimensional feel and look. It took everything in me to not walk out with this book in my hand. This book will be coming to me when I buy my Isabella Blow books. I can't wait to own this book. I have already been fantasizing about handing all the books in this series (4 tales total according to Vogue) to my future daughter.

Next up in the series? "The Elves and the Shoemaker" with none other than Manolo Blahnik. I die! Which is slated for Fall 2011.

Sneak a peek at petal & pink!

hahaha that title cracks me up. I'm a total nerd and will rhyme when I can. (Although, now I'm cringing. I hate alliteration, and that teeters the line of it....)

Right. Onto business. Here's a sneak peek at my new line. The goods will be hitting the shop later on today, I'll be adding one piece a day all week and all next week. Then sporadically the following. (I'm not a machine, people!)

What do you think? Are you as excited as I am?! There is cohesion when you see it all. I promise. And it's not just green. I have to yell at myself lately to lay off the green. What up with that?

DIY Jewelry Frame

Goodness, I'm sorry this is so late! I made this back in November and never got around to sharing it with you! Here's a jewelry display I made in hopes of better organizing my jewelry. I have a lot and it for a long time just gathered, messily, on my nightstand. The last picture, of the display in action, shows how neatly, my jewelry is currently being stored. Although, I'm already thinking of ways to improve it! I would like to point out that the total cost for all the supplies was under $30. (Click any picture to view larger)

Note: Glazier points are in the framing section of Michaels, or a home improvement store, the correct push tool could also be found here. The perforated sheet metal was in an obsolete corner of Home Depot. The sheet was 17x(something) and I could easily make another with the leftover scrap. Or even 2 smaller ones, of 4 teeny tiny ones...you get the point.

Introducing: Help from husband. I could have done this, but I had a shoulder injury at the time. It's not about brawn for this step...(I didn't want you all thinking I had man hands)

Please Note: There's a push tool that you can use (a framing specific tool) but ours is in "storage" at the moment. (By "storage" I mean my grandparents basement. Just like when I say "Laundry" I mean my parents house. Apartment living is so restrictive!)

Voila! The finished product in full use. It's made getting dressed in the morning so much easier since I'm not digging around trying to find an earrings mate!

New years reso-what?

So here I posted a list of goals for petal & pink in 2011.

Lets see.

So far, I'm out of chain, ear hooks, and closed jump rings. Stay on top of order supplies. FAIL.
I just bought this from Etsy. Pay myself, don't buy for myself. FAIL. (But it's elephants, I love elephants!)
I've changed my blog layout/design, and my twitter picture. But I'm still incomplete with the Etsy side of this all. C for effort.

The REAL part that I'm excited about is "Launch new line". As of right now, I've got a soft launch date of February 1st! That's right folks, Tuesday! What you should do is like me over on Facebook. That's where you'll get the most up-to-date sneak peeks into what it is I've been working on. I had originally felt that my ideas in my head would end up being two lines, but two contrasting ideas have come together better than I could have ever imagined, and I'm so excited about it. I'm hoping that with this line coming out soon, I'll be able to streamline the process for that line, and start working on another line (I know, crazy right?) for the summer, and also take those new streamlining skills into other parts of my little shop.

I'm trying to not be hard on myself. It is after all, still January. I am just really driven and I'd like to keep that drive to meet the other, bigger goals I've set for myself. (Like more than doubling my sales! yipes!)

Sure, it may be just weeks into 2011, and sure we may be getting more snow this week, and haven't even entered into our snowiest months of the year, but I've got Spring fever!

As part of my attempts to not only shop smart, but also to spend less money, I'm already working on things I'll need for my Spring and Summer wardrobe. I've been working on editing my closet, and finding out what I'm lacking, and removing what I don't wear anymore and I've noticed that there's quite a bit that will be needed for the warmer weather. Stylish What?

Friday, Amanda at Prim and Propah emailed me to let me know she was passing along the stylish blogger award to me. Say what? Blogger huh? I suppose I have a blog and the act of writing one would make me a "blogger" but it's just a silly little thing I'm doing. 3 months from now hopefully I still am, and I'd like to think that even a year from now I am. I just never thought of it like that. Well anyway, it's a little thingy-thing getting passed along the blog-world and I'm honored to be a part of it. All I have to do is link back to the person who nominated me (check!) and then...*groan* the 7 fun facts about yours truly. Truthbetold, I really don't enjoy doing things like this. It's a "fun" little thing we end up having to do at just about every work "getting to know you" event type deal we host. I have a standby, I use it always. But, here, you already know it. In my spare time, I make and sell jewelry.... I'm also aware that with every blog comes a little bit of self-involvement. I technically write to myself, and I write what I like and what I want to write, and sometimes I even write about myself. Me. Me. Me. And now that I seem to have rambled a bit to much about myself. Here are my 7 facts:

Technically I was on a date when I met my husband and exchanged phone numbers with him.
My mind is so creative, I remember the day my imaginary friend went away, and spent the entire day searching for her. She was only an inch or two tall, so every corner of my house was searched. And my parents weren't concerned at all. Not even when I told them that maybe just maybe she'd show up eventually.
I am unbelievably Type A when it comes only to certain things. Other things, I'm just like "Eh, whatever".
My copy of the Autobiography of Mark Twain is FINALLY on its way to me, and I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve, I cannot wait.
I will watch ANYTHING Bravo TV puts on. The Rachel Zoe Housewives of Top Chef Project? Count me in. I'm also probably one of 10 people who watched the Work of Art show they had, and one of maybe 3 who is sad it hasn't returned.
I have about 50 pairs of shoes, not counting flip flops and sneakers, and think of it as a point of pride.
My current internal conflict is bangs. To bang or not to bang? That is the question.

The final part of this is I'm supposed to pass this along to other bloggers. We'll see if I actually do. I don't want to impose. (Number 8 on this list would be that I constantly feel like I'm putting people out by asking things of them.)

OOTD: Rulebreaker

Last week, I tweeted about how I was living dangerously. I was breaking all the rules, and I didn't care. I was kicking booty and taking names.

My outfit last Friday broke some of the "big" fashion rules. I wore sequins in the daytime (and to work no less!) and I mixed navy and black. And then, as I was dressing I realized I wasn't being risky enough. Oh no, I then took a few more steps past the line that fashion rules have drawn, and wore leopard print flats on top of it all. Oh yes, I went there.

I was feeling good, and dangerous, so I took an outfit of the day picture to share.

It's not over the top sequin, well...maybe. It's hard to see in the picture, but they're bronze-gold colored and actually do make a bit of a sparkle statement, it's also navy fabric, not black as it appears to be here. My accessories are all black, and my leopard flats have black trim and bow.

It's funny, in reality this outfit is just a top, cardigan, skinny jeans and flats. I need to break down outfits that I see in magazines and draw inspiration from just like I did when I got dressed that day. For some reason I look at pictures and I look at the entire look. The whole look from head to toe. I never break it down. I just automatically think "I can't pull that off" or "I wish I could recreate that, but I never could..." Truth be told, I have a really good working wardrobe at the moment. I just need to look at it in individual pieces, not "I wear this top with that skirt and those heels." I can be and should be more adventurous. So in the future, I'm going here. Breaking rules, and not looking back. It really is incredible how much an outfit can change your mood, even when it's just jeans, top and cardigan. It's a simple bit, really.

Golden Globes Red Carpet Recap

Last night was the kickoff to awards season, the only warmth to my cold winter life. Although, I heard there was also a football game on yesterday, but nobody around here seems to want to talk about it...oh well. If you follow me on twitter, you got my instant reactions, but I figured I would also do a more organized recap here. I watch mostly for the fashion. I like to pretend I'm Joan Rivers without all the bad plastic surgeries and have at it. We'll start with the good and work our way to the ugly.

The Good:

Olivia Wilde. She was the first Red Carpet look I saw and all others were compared to this.

January Jones. After last years Oscar miss, she made a comeback. Red hot.

Anne Hathaway. Not everyone can pull off a long-sleeved evening gown.

The Ugly:

Kelly Osbourne. The only good is her druzzy ring.

Helena Bonham Carter. If it weren't for the shoes.
I actually find the hair and dress to be her, and I give
her loads of credit for staying true to herself. But I think
even Ms.Westwood would gasp at the shoes.

The most over-hyped baby bump:

Natalie Portman. Look guys! An empire waist and draping!
Seriously, why did everyone want to know what she'd do? She's
doing what most just-showing a bump celebs do. I do like the intentional
clashing colors on this dress though.

Other big things causing some chatter...

Bad Hair:

Dear Christian Bale, please shave, shower and cut your hair.
IMMEDIATELY.

Oh Sandy, can you even see through those heavy, long bangs?

Emma Stone. Washed out and trying to be...
Kate Beckinsale? Jamie Presley? Lindsey Lohan?

Further points of chatter that I don't have pictures for...Angelina Jolie reapplying lip gloss. What kind was it? It looked fab, and inquiring minds NEED to know! Also did Jane Fonda have a nip slip while she was up on stage? It kind seemed like it, but I'm sure as hell not googling that! And lastly Michael Douglas, causing numerous tears by letting us all know he's cancer-free.

Overall, it was a really good night of viewing. I really didn't see too much that were big disappointments fashion-wise, and I do have to say, it was 80 degrees there and a lot of long-sleeved gowns. I wouldn't be surprised if that continues on into the other awards, Anne Hathaway is getting a lot of chat about her gown, Leighton Meester wore one, so did Alexa Chung and Angelina Jolie. Julianne Moore could only support it half-way, but I'd be willing to bet we will be seeing much more of those styles down the line.

Baby got Back

While browsing the interwebs, I've been coming across a lot of tops for Spring that are pretty simple from the front, making your entrance just kind of average, but when you look at the back, you can tell that with these tops, it's all about the last impression as you walk out of the room. Here's a few back details that have caught my eye:

Past Reflections Pullover (Anthropologie): I love the back detail, but overall this top falls short for me. I don't care for the candy cane like stripes, or the knit, and the fabric just isn't doing it for me. Maybe in a different fabric/non-knit, I'd dig it.

Bow Back Corset Top (Free People): I love bows, and Free People has been infiltrating my closet at a rapid pace. I like the fact that the cutouts get smaller as they go down the back, helping nip in the waist, while the floaty almost peplum ruffling beneath helps hide any pooch. This needs to be mine. Paired with cuffed skinny jeans and flats or even wedges, and a cardigan on top for the workplace, perfect.

Lace Back Cardigan (Gap): Someone give this model a booty, stat! I love this cardigan, it's lace back is unexpected, and perhaps just what I need for a spring/summer work cardigan to leave at my desk. This would be great with a few dresses and sleeveless tops I already own. I'm picturing my Free People floral trapeze tank under this awesome lace detail, how feminine!

Chic Taupe Top (Lulus): Okay, part of me loves the lace racer back tank under this. Part of me thinks this top got into a fight with Freddy Kruger, Edward Scissorhands, and Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Fidelity Black and White Striped Top (Lulus): I like the drape and I'm a sucker for stripes. You could most certainly get away wearing a bra with this top, but the draping may make a booty look larger. I picture this more for the beach or a cookout, than any other kind of situation, just add shorty shorts, and sunblock.

In my wishes to shop smarter, I'm already working on my Spring and Summer wish list and needs. I've got a few things that need to be replaced for those seasons, and I'm looking forward to a little seasonal wardrobe update. I'll be sure to share what I come across. In the meantime, what say you on the back details? Yay? Nay? Did I miss a totally amazing top somewhere?

Free Nail Polish? Sign me up!

I have a bit of a nail polish obsession. Seriously. It's bad. I'm always painting my nails. I change colors at least 2 times a week. Or reapply just as much. I hate little chips in my polish and end up picking away the second I see a chip, before I know it the floor is covered with picked off chips of nail polish and I need to reapply. My husband accuses me of being addicted to the fumes. I think it's just I look at nail color as an accessory. Always changing to match moods, outfits, seasons.

Last June, I went for a manicure to kick off a weekend of "me" time. I had essentially been stressed out and just in desperate need of a weekend of no schedules, no chores, no responsibility, no nothing. Friday evening commutes can be hell, and I didn't want to start the weekend off frustrated, sitting in traffic so I scheduled an appointment at MiniLuxe on Newbury Street. I got to walk around, enjoy the warm weather, and just decompress knowing that I had not a single thing in need of my attention. The point of this story? It was when I was introduced to Zoya nail polish.

The color I picked was LC. Which was part of their "Gossip" line. It was the perfect red and orange shade for June. I loved the color, but what I loved more, was what I learned about Zoya. It is formaldehyde free, toulene free, and vegan friendly! I don't know what it means, but it sounds good! Anything that's vegan friendly is probably good for you.

I'm sure now you're wondering "What about the free polish!? My nails aren't going to paint themselves!". Fret not. All you need to do is head over to Facebook, and "like" Zoya. Happy New Year!!!

I've seen lots of posts about resolutions and the like, and while I feel like I laid out what I'd like to accomplish in my bucket list to my 20's, I figured I might as well lay out some foundation, and some goals for petal & pink.

First and foremost: BLOG MORE. This blog will continue to be a hybrid of DIY, Fashion, Etsy, Creativity, raves, and probably a few rants. I already have a few posts in mind, and I know I sound like a broken record, but putting pen to paper (or in this case, finger to keyboard) is really therapeutic.

Other goals:

Hit 150 sales in my Etsy shop
Mini blog/shop makeover
More features/giveaways, both here and on other blogs
Do 2-3 shows this year, more if possible
Track my expenses and start paying myself, and not by buying myself stuff!
Launch new line
Customer service
More Bridal/Custom orders
Look into and potentially start offering Gift Cards for Holiday 2011.

These are ambitious, but they are attainable. 150 sales means I need to more than double what I've done since I started selling on Etsy in 2007. (Wow, has it really been that long?!) Granted, I know so much more than I did back then, and have seen a steady uptick, I tend to lose momentum, and then essentially undo everything I've worked so hard to accomplish. I had been featured on the Etsy Finds email back in 2008, had been on several front pages between 2008-09 and had pieces featured in the Etsy blog. I had a good momentum going, and then stopped...which then caused it all to come crashing down. No more.

Doing more shows/giveaways will only help me gain exposure, even if it does take a slight hit to my budget at first. I'm working on launching a new line, and will look into hosting a giveaway somewhere for that when it's ready. (If you follow me on twitter, I've been giving sneak peeks into what I've been working on...well that was, until I ran out of supplies.)

Additional goal: STAY ON TOP OF SUPPLY ORDERS!

Customer service is always a strong point of mine, and while it doesn't need improvement per se, it should always be in focus. I think after Thanksgiving I had a sale, and ended up forgetting to send a Thank you email, but there was (and is always) one included in the package, but my biggest pet peeve is buying something and having the sale go unacknowledged. None of that any more. If I have time to email my friends, tweet, facebook, anything, then I have time to type a quick thank you email.

Bridal orders and custom orders are always so fun, adding more of these will only add more creativity into my life. And I love being a part of someones special day.

I've got much bigger goals further down the line, but on my immediate, these will be done this year radar are those big ones.

I am SO overly excited, about this years Pantone color of the year for 2011. Ridiculously excited.

Pantone Color of 2011, Honeysuckle

For anyone who knows me, you know I'm a HUGE fan of pink. Bright, cheery pinks; subdued, pastel powdery pinks, and sometimes even bright, almost neon pinks. I live for pink. If I can get something in pink, you better believe I'm doing it. (Even my favorite band ever, sings a song about my favorite color ever)
Pantone today, released it's color of the year, Honeysuckle, and I am beyond thrilled. From the Pantone site, they describe the color as: Courageous. Confident. Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world.

And today, it just goes with our fashion. (Yes, I am listening to that song while I type this..."inspiration" is what I'm calling it, but really, it's just an opportunity to play a less played CD by my boyfriend, Steven.)

I have a huge collection of pink beads in shades similar to this. I have more pink beads than I've been able to use in this shade. You better believe I'm taking advantage.

You see, it's not quite so new to me. I have been using this color for some time now, and I would like to show you the petal & pink contributions (from 2009 and 2010 mind you) supporting this "brave new color":

As you can see, I'm prepared, and you can expect to see plenty more of this shade in my shop for the time being. I love working with bright cheery pinks, and even when Pantone announces its next new color of the year, this color will still be with me. I may no longer be a little girl in pigtails with pink everything, but that girl has grown up, and continued with the color and made it mature with her.

Thoughts: Honestly, I am so so so so so happy to be done with this challenge. I've taken a lot from it, sure. But really, honestly and truthfully I've missed the diversity of my overflowing closet. Primarily with shoes, secondly with layering pieces. About a week or so into the challenge, I read a blog post from Amber, who said that she couldn't (wouldn't) do a challenge like this limiting her wardrobe because she's a layer-er. Any of my friends who know me, also know that I too, am a layer fiend. Summer, Winter, it doesn't matter, I layer it on. It's primarily why I chose 6 cardigan pieces. To layer. However, even picking 4 "fancy" tank/camis, I just couldn't get into it, and my dressing took a turn towards the simple. Sure, I've got PLENTY of jewelry to pick from, and a fair share of scarves and belts, but looking at my outfits, I really just wasn't feeling it. I stuck to it though, I'm not a quitter, but in the end, I don't think I got what others take away from it. I've really enjoyed this challenge, and I've found a few new twitter friends and blogs to read, but I'm just happy to get back into my closet, my precious shoes, and dress like me again...dripping in layers.

Now if you'll need me, I'll be rolling around in my closet, petting my shoes I've been longing for.

Where: Laundry and grocery shopping. (I won't lie, I needed to do laundry so I can wear my skinny jeans again.)

Thoughts: Okay, this challenge has been eye opening. Especially when it comes to my warm weather wardrobe, but I'll get into that on day 30. I can say that I am missing the rest of my clothes and getting really tired of these pieces. I also didn't account for the fact that while it was still 60 degrees when the challenge started, it is now only going to be in the 30's this week, and I don't have much that accounts for chilly temperatures.

Just 2 more days, I will make it!

Days 21-24. What I wore.

This isn't original, but this is clever. I wore TWO outfits yesterday! Which means I'm all caught up from my lazy pajama day after Thanksgiving! This is a big deal to me not because I want to shop (although, boy do I!) but because now my challenge will end on Tuesday, and I am free to wear whatever I want the day of my work Holiday party. Which just seems really refreshing.

How did I wear two outfits you may ask? Well, I went to work like I do most other days, and while at work, my husband emailed me asking me out on a date. A date?! Sure thing! Of course, going out in work clothes is not really my thing, so I came home and changed. I figured it was the perfect chance to put on a new outfit for the challenge and catch up. (I'm missing the rest of my closet at this moment, and this is a big deal to be one more outfit closer to reuniting with certain items). So now, I'm on track to finish on time. Huzzah!

So here are my outfits:

Day 21: Target dress and tights, Nordstrom scarf, Nine West flats

Where: Work.

Thoughts: I really wasn't feeling styling my hair that morning. Hence the poodle on my head.

Day 22a: J.Crew Jackie cardigan, Banana Flower embellished top, Express Editor pants, Target shoes, petal and pink necklace (an old favorite)

Where: Work again my friends. I walked to the PO and the shoes were comfy, they always impress me for Target shoes.

Thoughts: I need to cut back on soup at lunch, the sodium is making me puffy.

Day 22b: Same BR top, Gap Cardigan, Gap Skinnies, Naughty Monkey Detective boots, petal and pink necklace

Where: A super sexy date to Office Depot, Starbucks and Barnes and Noble. Starbucks and BN was supposed to be the date, but I was out of mailing envelopes and Office Depot is across the street.

Thoughts: I was so much more comfortable in this outfit than what I wore all day at work. I also drank my weight in water, so that may have helped.

Day 24: Anthro top, Grey Gap Modern Boot pants, Nine West pumps.

Where: work

Thoughts: Why yes, those are my Steve Madden flats in the picture. You see, while I still wear the "death shoes" I have taken to switching in and out of flats to get to/from my office. I left work and realized. Yup. Shoes are still at my desk. I got to my car and realized "ugh. I forgot the asparagus and buttermilk in the fridge, now I have to go back." (What doesn't everyone buy random groceries at lunch?) On the walk back to my office thought "Well, at least I can pick up my shoes..." and then drove home with my asparagus and buttermilk and cursed at my shoes...still sitting next to my desk. It was one of those days.

My other impressions? Well, I'm thinking now I should have gone by outfit numbers instead of calling them days...Also, at this point, I just want to be done. I feel like I have worn every single article of clothing this week alone, and even though I know it's not true, I just want something different. A plain sweater (it's getting cold!) or my pinstripe pants...just something not these clothes. Although, I do have some fun (to me) outfits planned for the next few days. Here's hoping they turn out!

Faux-hem. How-to.

I'm short. Like 5'4" if I haven't just come out of the dryer, short. So pants, jeans especially, can run long on me. As a wee one, I embrace heels. I love heels. But sometimes, a girl just wants the comfort of flats. I'm anti going anywhere but the gym when it comes to athletic sneakers, and I think the times friends of mine have seen me outside a workout situation in my sneaks is all of 2 times. I moved in flip flops. I'm that anti-sneaker. So sometimes my jeans run long, and I want to wear flats, and until just last spring, I just dealt with it. I let my jeans get walked on, which always ends up with ratty, torn, jean bottoms. Nothing ruins a pair faster. I would sometimes tuck my jeans under, but then you lose the hem stitch, and it can look a little funny. I've seen contraptions to work on your hems and shorten them, but again, you mostly lose the hem, or you have some flourescent, bedazzeled device hanging out at your hem and that's just not me. After googling "faux hem", "fake hem", "shorten your jeans keep the hem", and about a dozen other phrases along those lines, I've seen my fair share of how-to's, video tutorials, and weirdo contraptions to use on your pants. I've finally found a way that works for me, and it's really quite simple. So here goes. 4 easy steps to faux-hem your jeans.

Okay, not so much a step, but as you see here...long jeans, flat shoes. Your shoes that you want to wear...you'll want those on. It will help dictate your length to faux-hem.

Then, cuff your pants to the length you want them to be. I do both legs at the same time, to help ensure they're even.

Then (and this is the tricky part but once you get the hang of it, you're golden) hold onto the hem of your jeans and tuck the cuff underneath into your leg.

Viola! Adjust hem, bunching as needed. You can see here in the close up a little fold line, but once you stand up, it's really hard to notice. And the closer the fold is to the hem, the harder it is to see even close up. (As seen with the back part of the leg in this shot).

Optional: Use a safety pin or a regualr pin to pin the inside to hold it more secure. Just be sure to hide the pins as well. I haven't had any issues with my jeans coming undone. I think if I was doing this with a pair of dress pants, I may want to use some pins to hold them.

Easy peasy. Now you'll be able to wear your favortie jeans with heels or flats. And if you're doing the 30 for 30 challenge, you may be able to squeak out a few more outfits with this little trick.

I've been meaning to share this. I was ~~shopping~~ at the mall with my mother not too long ago. (It was day 1 of the 30 for 30 challenge to be exact. I was worried about being strong and shopping and ruining it all on the first day. I was good, and didn't buy, but my wallet was really confused.)

Anyway, I was shopping and as I walked through the shoe section with my mom (the torture!) she pointed to a pair of boots and said "Aren't those your boots?"

Madden Girl Zoiiee boots ($63.96 at Zappos)

Wow. Kind of. Yeah. They're actually really close! Contrast zipper, buckles, ruching at the bend, very close indeed.

My boots (from DSW in Black here) are a more cognac shade, and have 2 buckles at the top, and are genuine leather, not a man made synthetic. However, comparing the two prices, the Madden Girl ones are less than half! If I had paid the full $150 for the ones from DSW (I paid $30), I would have been upset. I can't vouch for the comfort of the Madden Girl Zoiiee, but I absolutely love my SM ones, and the comfort is there in those. I wear them all day, and never have had any problems with them.

If you're looking for a similar pair without the buckles, check out these ones by Mix No.6. I wasn't impressed with them in person, but they may work with your budget/style choice.

Days 18-20

10 more days left. I think this is the part where I start going a little bit crazy. Or maybe it's the onslaught of all things Holiday for the next month that's coming on...either way, here's what I wore for days 18-20!

Day 18: Top, Cardigan, and Skinnies: Gap. Boots: Steve Madden, socks: Target, Neckalce: Forever 21 (or 29 in my case. *wink wink*)

Where: Thanksgiving dinner (house hopping for the best eats!)

Where: Running errands

Day 20: Anthro Cardigan, Gap Forever Straight Jeans, Steve Madden Flats

Where: My parents house

Thoughts: First of all, I tweeted on Thanksgiving about wearing my black dress and this cardigan. But, I really wanted to wear those boots. I live in them. But when I put them on, the proportions were all off. So I tossed on this instead. The cardigan was still great when it came to hiding the extra servings of cheese potatoes, rolls, and cake/pie gallore. Also, I'm now a day behind on the challenge. You see, the day after Thanksgiving...I don't leave my apartment. I have always taken the day after Thanksgiving as a sort of mental health day. The most strenuous thing I did all day was shower and put on clean lazy clothes. And I'll tell you this...It. Was. Glorious. I also REALLY love outift 19. I love the way the boots and teal go together. I also think that I wore this outfit in a way, that made it look new to me (on me?) I don't know. All I know is that my husband asked me if this was a new shirt. 1. I wore it last week. 2. It's over a year old. Either way, I'm taking it as a win for the challenge!

I faux hemmed my pants again today. I will have that how-to for you later on this week. I have currently over 160 pictures to go through. I was a beading machine, and created a ton of new jewelry and photographed the hell out of it. I also have the DIY steps for my earring holder to go through, and the faux hem. My computer and I will be inseperable over the next few days. Thoughts: There isn't much I have to say about many of the pictures. However, day 16...I had a 2 hour ride home and needed to take the picture of my outfit. So, I got home grabbed my camera, turned it on, only to find out it was on...and my battery was drained. I threw the battery on the charger and stuffed my face with Triscuits while waiting for a slight bit of a charge. I was hungry, and cranky. So that was me in a post Triscuit, 2 hour commute haze. I actually had better pictures but I got a little delete happy and this was the only picture I had left. Luckily I caught myself when I had this one lonely picture left. I wouldn't be happy if I had to change to retake a picture!

In general, I'm going through withdrawal from the rest of my wardrobe. My other clothes are calling to me, and I miss them. I suppose I could take a day off, but I know if I fall off the wagon, it's going to be hard to get back on it. I'm going to push through. I will make it. I may have to remove all my clothes for this challenge from my closet, but I will get through it! Accessories, I'm calling on you now. Help me push on!

Man, it has been a month for me. Times have been crazy, and I'm looking forward to the fact that aside from a work holiday party, and a dentist appointment, I have absolutely nothing planned for the next few weeks. (Although I'm sure Holiday crazy will take over soon).

I've been beading up a storm, and I've fallen way behind on listing new items on Etsy. I've also fallen behind on renewing items there, too. It's hard to keep up sometimes! I have taken pictures this past weekend, and I promise new items are coming almost daily moving forward!

Days 6-13 of the challenge

Whew! It has been a week for me! I'm both sad and happy it is over. I've run the gamut of emotions, and I'm looking forward to some stability. Not to mention that Thanksgiving is coming up fast! I've got plenty to be thankful for, but I haven't quite caught the holiday cheer. Here's hoping this short week at work will help me along. And if not, I'll get the holiday "spirit" via Pumpkin Pie Martini's at my aunt's house. (if you know what I mean...and I think you do.)

Now, onto the outfits!

Day 6: Anthro blouse, Gap skinnies, Steve Madden boots.

Where: A baby shower. Like the hundredth it seems within the past few months. (or third whatevs). This was husband saying "Show me happy to go to a baby shower!" I think my sarcasm is obvious.

Day 7: Gap top, Gap skinnies, Nine West flats, Coach Tote, DKNY sunnies

Where: Road trip with the husband, errands.

Day 8: Anthro sweater, Express lace trim cami, Gap skinnies, Steve Madden Flats, petal & pink bracelet

Where: Work. We were moving files from one cabinet to another. I work in HR, there's a lot of files. We all dressed casual Monday for this.

Thoughts on these days: My hair looked way better in person on Day 6. Looking at it in the picture though, you'd never know! I also swear I washed the skinny jeans Sunday night (Day 7). I live in my skinny jeans, and I actually own 2 pairs of them. I considered just switching to the clean pair, but felt it might be cheating. lol. I love the sweater in Day 8. It's comfortable and the colors are fun. I don't know if it's the angle of the picture or not, but seeing it in a picture, I question the proportion of the print though. I guess we'll see what else happens during this challenge and that sweater.

Day 9: Anthro top, Gap Modern Boot pants in grey, Nine West pumps, petal & pink bracelet

Where: Work. It wasn't too much of an eventful day, honestly.

Day 10: J.Crew Jackie Cardigan, Express Editor pants, Target Mary Janes, DIY bracelet via Beadin' Path

Where: Work. Running a few errands after work.

Day 11: Gap sweater, Express lace trim cami, Ann Taylor Loft pencil skirt, Target Mary Janes

Where: Work, Training session, drinks with husband.

Thoughts: Day 9, I was inspired by another piece of jewelry I've made. I don't know why I never think of mixing jewel tones with my dark grey pants. It was a really warm day, and I enjoyed not having to wear a cardigan or jacket at work. Day 10, I really wanted to wear my coral toned layered bracelet, and love the combination with a silver-grey shade. Day 11, I'm not sure of the proportions of the outfit, but my calves look diesel! Thank-you, Body Pump!

Day 12: Gap Cardigan, Express lace trim cami, Gap Forever Straight jeans, Nine West pumps, petal & pink earrings

Where: Work. Casual Friday. Not feeling color. It happens

Day 13: J.Crew Jackie Cardigan, Express lace trim cami, Gap Forever Straight jeans, Nine West flats, T&Co bangle.

Where: Errands, errands, and a few more errands.

Thoughts: I purposely wanted to post these two pictures together. It's the same pair of jeans, but the hem is different lengths. I've found an amazing trick to hemming long jeans to make them flat-appropriate. You even get to still see the original hem on the jean so it looks really natural. I've also been slowly working on mixing prints. The leopard print with the print on the bangle were big for me. The bangles print is subtle, but the shape/design of the print actually compliment each other nicely.

Overall 30 for 30 thoughts: So far, so good. I really feel like I need to start kicking it into gear with the accessories. Scarves, belts, etc. I've got them all. I don't know why I'm so lazy with them lately.

Coming up: I still need to do the DIY on the jewelry holder, and I want to also show you how I do the hem on my pants, so that will be coming up too. And I'm preeety sure that there's a giveaway this week since my twitter is at 1,000 followers!! I'm just waiting to maintain that number for a few days since twitter counts can vary often!

I have to give a huge amount of credit to those fashion bloggers who can do daily "Outfit of the day" posts.

I cannot do that. I found out by day 5 of the 30 for 30 challenge that I was not able to keep up with this. Luckily, having gotten through days 1-5, I've come to a conclusion. I'm no longer doing daily outfit posts. I'm still doing the challenge, but I really need to dedicate the time after my 9-5 to petal and pink. It's almost the holiday season, and I need to stock up the shop. And, a fashion blog is not what I want this to become (although I'll still share things I've bought/lusting after/searching for in terms of fashion talk).

What's going to happen? During the week, I'll post any thoughts I'm having about the challenge. Over the weekend, I'll post the outfits I've worn during the week. So, on Saturday, the 20th, I'll post outfits from 11/13-11/19.

So, what are my first impressions of days 1-5 of this challenge? So far, so good. However, I haven't worn everything yet. I've still got variety! One thing I do wish? I wish I had chosen a few more casual tops. While I do live in cardigans/tanks during the week, I would have liked to have a bit more variety for days where I'm just doing laundry and running errands. The no shopping has been easy. But I can--and often do--go more than a week without shopping.

Day 5. Semi-pro on casual Friday

I had a reception thing I had planned at work today, where the President would be speaking to a small group of people. I work in a casual environment, so business dress is not always appropriate, especially on Fridays. This is what I wore to work today. For the reception, I threw a blazer that I keep at my desk (primarily for when I'm pulled into interviews) to up the ante for the reception.

I learned a few things about this outfit though:

1. My jeans gape a little in the back. Which means I had to retuck my shirt in the back every. single. time. I stood up.

2. My jeans have bled (despite being washed a few times), thus staining the bottom of my shirt a light indigo color.

3. These puffy sleeves show even through the blazer I put on, so things get bunchy and awkward.

I'm a big advocate for every girl (woman? I feel that makes us all sound old...) owning a white blouse. Not a boring "Table for two?" kind of blouse but one that makes a playful wink to the white blouse. My next one won't have so much going on in the sleeves so it's easier to layer though.

Also, these shoes are a total knock-off of these Calvin Klein shoes (which were available in grey)...I loved them last year when I saw them at Macy's, but couldn't justify their cost ($115ish) at a time where I already had 3 pairs of shoes I was buying. (I'm a shoe whore...my closet, and under my bed are stuffed with shoes) so I was excited to find these at Target for a fraction of the price.

This weekend I'm hoping to get my craft on. I've got plans for an earring holder (DIY coming with that!) and plenty of jewelry (I never finished the piece I was hoping to wear with today's outfit). Hopefully I can find some down time to do it! I also want to roast a whole chicken, and bake molasses cookies. We'll see how far I get with it all!

I realized today that I was in charge of my own destiny...er...photos. Husband was out after work, and I went to the gym. So what's a girl to do? Set the camera on the bookcase, do the timer and try to get some outfit shots. All of this was happening when I was supposed to be heading out the door. Talk about a lack of planning.

I will say that I like morning light much better in my pictures, and it's more agreeable for me when it comes to fiddling with my camera settings. I'll probably do this more often.

Comfort was key in today's outfit, and this cardigan is so cozy. I just wrap myself up in it and it is like a blanket around me. These boots I got for a steal. Between my $10 reward, $5 birthday coupon, a sale ($50 off $150 purchases) and a gift card, I only paid $30 for these, and I live in them. I was concerned originally about the contrast zipper when I saw them online, but I figured I could grab a fabric marker and make it black if it bugged me. But it turns out, I don't even care. I actually kind of like it!

Today's outfit is one that I pictured in my head, and was worried may come out a hot mess, but I like how it turned out. Sometimes this happens. 99% of the time it's a disaster. The only disaster in this, is the picture. I was not in the mood to fix lighting and camera settings, and sadly the best picture is this out-take (as you can see, husband pointed out that my buckle on my boot is acting out). Oh well, it happens! I have never claimed to be a model or a fashion blogger. In fact, I'm far from both.

This dress is hands down the best $10 I've ever spent at Target. It's pretty versatile, and lucky for me I'm short, which means it's not nearly as short on me as it is on the model online. I have to say, that the hemline pushes work appropriate-ness, but thanks to tights I feel like hemlines can be a little shorter in the workplace now and it's okay. The v-neck on this is narrow, but somewhat deep. Thankfully I've got small bubbies, and it's not inappropriate or vulgar. Although, the depth of it has caused some fidgeting when I wear it to work. My boss said she liked my outfit today, and being HR and all, if she didn't, I would also know. Length and depth are a-okay this way in the workplace!

I bought this belt during one of Nordstroms big sales back in 2004. I'm surprised that I still have it, and that my 2004 Erin bought it. Style was just something I wanted, but seriously lacked back then. I do need to find out how to adjust this belt though, it's a bit big, slides around, and goes from sitting in the right spot to the "omg no. just no" spot, and in general has caused a constant adjusting of my top to make sure all the pieces stay in place. I thought I could just adjust it (there are holes for it) over the silver part, but apparently not. I have, however, successfully broken it or at least loosened it and have had to fix it a couple times today. (Note: It looks like I have to unscrew to rivet-y thing and adjust that way...I'll have to bust out my tools when I get a chance)

Tonight, I plan on getting my craft on. I want to make something, for an outfit I may wear Friday. I have a reception thing at work with the President, and I need to be President appropriate, but I also want to wear jeans. Accessories will be key in pulling this off.

This outfit, isn't a risk per se, but I for some reason never thought of wearing this cardigan with my grey pants. Which is strange...I like these colors together! I have earrings in my shop in this color combination, I've made myself a bracelet with it...why I didn't translate my jewelry and beads into real wearable clothing is beyond me! I was feeling all excited and confident when I passed a coworker who said "I like your outfit, the colors are like an updated 70's office attire". I said "thanks." but I don't think I meant it.

I have a love/hate relationship with these shoes. I love that they're comfy, tall, the essential black heel for me, and I wear them multiple times a week. However, they've been nicknamed my "death shoes". The leather stretched (after 1 wear!) and as I was walking in my parking lot at work, I stepped out of one shoe, plummeting the 4 inches to my death. As I was trying to (not so gracefully) hold my bag, purse, coffee and catch myself from falling flat on my face, the other shoe kicked me out and I found myself standing barefoot with a horrified look on my face in the grody parking lot. I've put heel bumper things to help with the fit and to help prevent me from walking out of my shoes, but I still don't trust these shoes just yet. I now find myself carrying a pair of flats with me "just in case". I might go to a cobbler (is that what they're still called?) and get real inserts since the ones I buy seem to fall off after a few weeks. I haven't attempted these shoes in a night out, because of this fear, and really, these bad daddies are just screaming for a night out.

Anyone have any suggestions for keeping these shoes on my feet? I haven't been able to find the Foot Petals brand, so I do have those on my radar, and I may just have to do it through Amazon. Also, colors? 70's? Nay?

I guess I'm easing into this challenge. Taking a simple outfit with simple accessories. Some people like to start off with a bang, not me. I like to set the bar low, so I can then exceed expectations and always keep people on their toes.

Actually, a lot of this outfit has to do with a few things:

1. I've had an emotionally draining weekend. This is easy dress, and that's all I had the mental capacity for.

2. After work, I'm going shopping with my mom for a baby shower gift. Last time I did, I wore an outfit that could have led others to think I was the one expecting. Lesson learned.

3. Since I'll be shopping straight from work, I needed to wear my flats. My other shoe options aren't quite how I want to start out my work week (boots would mean jeans, heels are a no-go for all day on my feet followed with a shopping trip).

4. I've just recently started to be more experimental with my wardrobe selections, which means this challenge will help pull me out of my comfort zone...but today all I wanted was comfort and since work doesn't approve of yoga pants, flip flops and a 10 year old hoodie, this is what they got.

On a positive note, I should say I bought these cords over the summer and I was quite relieved they still fit. I've had a few lazy months when it came to working out, and it was nice to know they fit. Even after eating my face off in Milwaukee. Better yet, these cords pass the "voop, voop" test. You know, the sound corduroy pants can make when you walk? These are silent. As all pants should be seen, not heard. Score!

Gap also has gotten quite a bit of my money lately. They have been so far removed from my closet for so long, and now the majority of my remix items are Gap. Way to make a comeback, Gap!

I'm going to have to study up on how others pose. This pose makes my booty look large...not a good look. I promise a more interesting outfit tomorrow, and more of an effort going forward.

In conclusion, I'd also like to thank New England weather for the giant "F-you" that it gave me this morning. As if I wasn't dealing with enough already, I walked out to my car to find a sleet-y, slushy, almost snow like substance on my car. Thanks, that makes this mood all the better.
